His grandfather showed him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup everything he could about poker. He routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the detrimental comments from other people kill his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.

Phil began competing intently after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a teaching period and winning wasn't a normal outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made two final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he destroyed many of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and a continuing passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he's learning every single day and is very humble about his accomplishments. Despite the fact that Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a regular basis.
