Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the globe by quite a few of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His papa showed him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to discover anything he could about poker. He would tell his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He didn't let the adverse comments from other people destroy his goal of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.

He began playing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a teaching period and winning wasn't a regular outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he defeated a number of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an undying love for poker. He says that he is picking up skills every single day and is incredibly abashed about his success. He knows he makes errors in each session of poker and always aspires to improve.

Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
